Sam Parker has been a consultant surgeon since October 2023. He completed his surgical training within the subspecialties of colorectal and emergency general surgery. During his career he steered his surgical training towards establishing unrivalled expertise within the field of abdominal wall reconstruction (complex hernia surgery), an emerging subspecialty within general surgery. Sam currently works at Croydon University Hospital as an advanced abdominal wall surgeon. Sam is experienced at performing retro-rectus repairs, anterior and posterior component separation (TAR), peritoneal flap repairs, and pre-operative pneumoperitoneum. He also works as an inflammatory bowel disease surgeon and as a colorectal and emergency surgeon. For his inflammatory bowel disease work he works with an excellent team at Croydon who provide outstanding care for their patients. His practice also includes day case coloproctology for the treatment of haemorrhoids, fissures, and fistulas.

Sam is a highly motivated academic within the field of abdominal wall reconstruction. He has written and published over 30 papers with this field of surgical science, and has an HI index of 16. He completed his PhD at UCL in 2021. His research work has focused on standardised nomenclature for complex hernia, establishing an internationally classification of abdominal wall planes (ICAP), and more recently an in-depth analysis of the anatomical variation of abdominal wall musculature. He is currently the principal investigator for the TROCAR trial, which is assessing the usage of a novel suture (DuraMesh) for laparoscopic port-site closure. He intends to increase his research output over the next few years by co-supervising PhD students at University College London.
